exceptional technical skills and a keen eye for detail? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for
you to join our team as the Head Ice Technician at the Lacombe Curling Club through the 2024/2025 season. Lacombe is a city of 13,000 located in Central Alberta just north of Red Deer, AB. Our Club of 340 members operates a six-sheet facility from October to April. There are daily and evening leagues 4 days a week along with junior programs, occasional weekend bonspiels, and rentals.
Job Brief
As the Head Ice Technician, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that our curling facility offers exceptional ice conditions for our members and guests. You will be responsible for installing, maintaining and overseeing the ice surface and facilitating an enjoyable and competitive environment for players of all skill levels. Your meticulous approach and expertise will contribute significantly to the success and reputation of our club.
Qualifications:
● Level 2 Ice Technician Certification or higher is required
● Strong Time Management, organizational and communication skills.
● Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and holidays per programming needs
● Exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate to members, the business community, curling associations, and other stakeholders through excellent oral and written communication skills.
● Excellent time management skills with the ability to perform well under pressure.
● Strong work ethic that values responsibility, accountability and reliability.
● Ideally, a curling “enthusiast” who is familiar with all aspects of the sport. NCCP coaching levels and previous coaching experience are considered an asset.
Salary:
The salary range is commensurate with education and experience.
Ice Maker Responsibilities:
Ice Surface & Equipment Management:
● Execute ice installation and regular flooding, including painting ice and installing decals and lines.
● Ensure a consistent ice surface for all curlers by diligently maintaining the ice throughout the season
● Perform rock maintenance before and during the season to ensure optimal curl
● Maintain all ice-making equipment and the water system, regularly inspecting and documenting actions taken for proper upkeep
● Facility preparation and cleaning before draws, during bonspiels and ice rentals
● Remove and store the ice, rocks, equipment, walkways, houses, hacks, decals and dividers, at the end of the season.

Facilities:
● Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements at the federal, provincial and local levels and maintain accurate documentation
● Implement appropriate safety measures and protocols to ensure a secure environment
● Open and close facility as required.
Other Duties:
● Coordinate activities of other ice tech volunteers, providing skill development and support.
● Work with the Manager for scheduling and coordination of preparation & maintenance of ice.
● Promote the game of curling to all members and guests.
● Oversee recruitment, training and supervision of ice staff and volunteers.
● Attend all executive and club meetings upon request.
● Maintain daily records of ice temperatures and plant readings.
● Attend to minor building maintenance.
● Provide solutions to issues (e.g. ice surface, ice-making equipment, etc.)
● Other duties as assigned by the Governance Committee.
