Curling Alberta Announces Original 16 as its Official Beer and Presenting Partner of the Curling Club Championships
Curling Alberta is thrilled to announce a new three-year partnership naming Original 16 as its official beer.
The partnership provides Curling Alberta’s licensed member clubs with the opportunity to offer the brand, which includes Canadian Pale Ale, Copper Ale, Prairie White and Helles Half Acre varietals, at their facility along with some extra perks such as promotional items and even the potential for club-based sponsorships.
“Original 16 is an iconic, prairie brand with a rich curling heritage,” Curling Alberta’s Executive Director, Jill Richard, stated. “We’re extremely fortunate to have a partner who understands the power of connecting with average curlers as the lifeblood of our sport.”
In addition to becoming the official beer of Curling Alberta, Original 16 will gain the presenting sponsor position of the Curling Club Championship category in the province. This category is unique because the competition, which progresses all the way to a national championship, starts out in local clubs and actually restricts top players from competing.
“The Curling Club Championships are aimed a true, club-level curling teams, giving them an opportunity to compete for the ultimate prize in curling in Alberta: a provincial championship banner,” Richard said.
“Through our partnership with Original 16, we hope to build the tradition of the Curling Club Championships in Alberta as our most popular category of competition.”
The three-year agreement will also see Original 16 being the official beer of Curling Alberta’s Awards Celebration, which are held annually to recognize its champions and other award recipients. Curlers and fans can expect to see the Original 16 brand featured at many Curling Alberta events and on a variety its platforms including social media.
“We are excited to partner with Curling Alberta and the opportunity to be involved with the sport at a community and grass root level. Curling brings people and their communities from across the province of Alberta”, said Original 16’s Chief Commercial Officer, Strat Kane. “It also reflects our company’s desire to help Alberta’s curlers connect over shared passions and great beer.”
Clubs that would like to talk to Original 16 about opportunities to feature curling’s official beer should contact Director of Sales, Jason Power at [email protected] or (403) 540-3382.

About Original 16
Original 16 is a true Prairie success story. Almost 30 years ago, after being told their Saskatoon brewery was to be closed by Molson, 16 bold and determined employees stood up and pooled their resources. They founded the Great Western Brewing Company. These “Original 16” underdogs risked it all, for beer. In an industry of Goliaths, they were David. Competing against more experience and more resources, they brewed on. Original 16 has now become a part of the Western Canadian character. Original 16 uses only the finest ingredients to brew beer – starting with 100% Saskatchewan barley. The smoothness and full-bodied flavour come from a double-aging process – you simply cannot rush great beer. More information about Original 16 can be found at www.original16.ca.
