What you will need:

Eckville Curling is seeking a Facility Manager/ Ice Technician to start for the 2024-2025 curling season.
Eckville Curling is a non-profit society that operates a four-sheet facility with membership of approximately 100 curlers. In addition to 2-3 evening leagues, we host 4-5 bonspiels throughout the season, and offer rentals, school usage and other sanctioned events that arise throughout the curling season.
We are looking for a dynamic individual who can not only relate to people in the curling community but with those in the general community to promote curling and its benefits. The individual should have a strong commitment to the sport of curling, be outgoing, business-minded and motivated to provide the membership and guests a satisfied and lasting impression of our facility.
As the Facility Manager/Ice Technician you are responsible for the installation and maintenance of the ice for the curling season and the maintenance of the facility.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Type of Employment: Contract, reporting to the Board of Directors
Time Commitment: Part-Time, Seasonal (includes weekdays, evenings and some weekends)
• Curling Season: October 1 to April 15, with 2-3 leagues operating per week for 20 weeks, and 5 weekend events/ bonspiels (exact dates and times determined annually).
• Spring/ Summer Dry Floor Season: April 15 to September 30, general building maintenance and monitoring (exact dates determined annually).
• Total approximate hours of work for Monitoring & Maintenance, Curling Prep Work, League Nights, Bonspiels, scheduled Drop-In and other events in a full year is 925-975 hours.
Start Date: September 2024
Wages/ Salary: Hourly wage open to negotiation
6-month probationary period included in Contractor Agreement
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Oversee and maintain the curling facility in the areas of ice maintenance (ice installation, day-to-day and long-term maintenance and upkeep of the ice, the ice area, and the change room areas of the curling rink), building and grounds maintenance and the operation and repair of mechanical equipment to ensure the safe operation of the curling club for all activities and events.
Facility Management
• Monitoring of interior of building and all its’ mechanical functions throughout the year (checking a minimum of 3 times per week in down time / seasons).
• Monitor all downstairs areas for cleanliness during activities.
• Monitor and stock cleaning and washroom supplies as needed (toilet paper, Kleenex, paper towel, soap, etc.).
• Lead on repairs & general maintenance of building and its contents.
• Clean, groom and vacuum ice area as needed.
• General monitoring & maintenance of exterior of building (ie: snow shoveling as needed).
Ice Technician Services
• Perform ice making and maintenance duties.
• Ensure quality ice surface and a safe curling rink environment is maintained for patrons.
• Annual start up activities, maintenance and ice making operations (i.e. oversee servicing of the refrigeration plant, floors and pipe repairs, conduct flooding, ice painting, line & ring installation, divider installation).
• Scrape, pebble, and sweep the ice areas.
• Plan and implement an ice maintenance program.
• Monitor to ensure maintenance and ice making standards are maintained and adjustments are made.
• Oversee the plant shutdown operations.
• Adhere to all policy and safety guidelines as outlined in policy and procedures.
• Keep curling Board informed on all aspects of the facility/maintenance operation.
EXPERIENCE
Previous experience in curling ice maintenance services.
• minimum (5) years of experience in making curling ice
• preferably 1 – 2 years as a Head Ice Technician
• Level 2 Ice Technician certification.
SKILLS
• Experience with season start up installation including flooding, painting of surface, installation of lines, decals and houses, dividers, hacks, etc.
• Experience texturing rocks.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations with the ability to spot and address safety risks.
• Knowledge and ability to complete ice making responsibilities such as scraping, pebbling, and nipping.
• Knowledge in temperature monitoring and control.
• League and bonspiel draw change procedures.
• Basic knowledge and ability to troubleshoot ice and ice equipment problems.

CURLING RINK ICE TECHNICIAN
General Overview:
The premier Springbank Park for All Seasons Curling Rink & twin indoor, one outdoor covered arena / multi sports facility, has a fall opening for 1 Full Time or Part Time Curling Rink – Ice Technician. Typically working 8 hr. shifts weekdays including some evenings and weekend shifts, with some flexibility to adjust schedule to fit. The Park offers an excellent benefits plan for Full Time staff, and a quality work culture / environment. There is a possibility we may consider interested Part Time employment applicants as well.
The position reports to and works closely with the Operations Manager or designate, & is responsible primarily for helping provide the public & members with a high-quality run curling rink, 3 arenas and a multitude of outdoor sports venues that are kept safe, clean, and always in good well maintained operating condition. This position requires good well mannered communication skills to work in and around our curling club members, directly with other staff members and the general public. The Curling Rink Ice Technician must understand the importance of safe work practices, & have solid experience building & maintaining Curling rink Ice / & hockey Ice is also beneficial. Curling Rink Ice care experience is the key requirement, but driving a Zamboni ice resurfacer experience would also be considered beneficial.
Main Duties:
To maintain the Curling Rinks Ice Surfaces in a detailed quality and safe manner using an Ice Scraper, and carrying out all aspects of curling rink ice install and maintenance duties. Driving a Zamboni ice resurfacer in our arenas, when needed (to assist with our other rinks care), etc., can also be beneficial, but is not primary function of the position
To follow the directions given by the Operations Manager
To follow the daily check sheets to maintain the level of cleanliness in the facilities that is required for this position (as well as Custodial duties which comprise of a percentage of the job).
To monitor the refrigeration plant and accurately document readings in the log book provided (and understand how the refrigeration plant works).
To report any problems with the refrigeration plant to your direct supervisor
To follow all MSDS requirements of all the chemicals that are used in the facility
To have initiative to undertake items that may not be on a list, but is noticed and these items need attention
To identify maintenance deficiencies, report those deficiencies to your supervisors and start repairs to the best of your ability
To comply with all safe work practices of the facility
To receive training and implement the new training practices into daily duties
To work closely with other staff to ensure that facility set-up and cleaning activities are coordinated around scheduled user groups and other facility bookings
To work with contractors and other external parties while operating facilities, if needed.
To attend staff meetings as required.
Attributes and Qualifications:
– Level 2 (Curling Alberta) – Curling Ice Technician, & Arena Operating and Ice
Care experience – preferable including experience and skills for driving a
Zamboni of Olympia Ice Resurfacing machine, but this last one is not a position
specific requirement.
– AARFP Arena Operator Level 1 or 2 (is beneficial as well)
– Very good communication skills
– Possesses initiative and is self-motivated
– Basic computer skills
– Time management skills
– Accurate documentation skills
– Mechanical ability to use motorized equipment and various electrical power equipment
– Willingness to work evening and weekend shifts
– Willingness to take training to improve qualifications and knowledge for the benefit of

Hourly wage (range $21.96 to $28.00), to commensurate with experience and Curling Ice Technician and or Arena Operator Certification Levels. Subsidization of Curling Alberta and or ARFPA Training courses, is made available after agreed upon timeframes and upon successful on the job performance.

Ice Technician

Acadia Recreation Complex is a community run not-for-profit that offers ice rentals for arena and curling programs, hall, event rentals, squash, racquetball and pickleball rentals to the community.
We are looking for Ice Technicians to support with the daily operations and upkeep of the building.
As an Ice Technician you will report to the Manager, Curling Operations and will be part of an elite team that operates and maintains the Acadia Arena and 10 sheet Curling high performance ice surfaces and all arena infrastructure. This position predominantly provides maintenance to ensure high-performance ice standards.
Permanent Part time leading to Full time: 16 – 30 hours per week
Salary: $18.00 – 22.00 an hour depending on experience
Schedule: evenings and weekends
on call to cover other shifts as needed when other staff have scheduling conflicts.
Responsibilities:
● Maintain ice, preparation of evening curling draws
● Monitor the ice plant regularly, keeping appropriate notes/ records or reports
● Completes all log reports as required
● Routine facility maintenance (changing lights, changing blades, painting, repairs, etc.)
● Perform snow removal, graffiti removal, de-ice (sanding, salting)
● Setup and teardown ice with necessary equipment for rentals and programs
● Setup and teardown of table and chairs and all equipment for rentals and event programs
● Assist with check ins for Acadia Community programs,rentals and tournaments.
● Provide direction and mentorship to assisting attendants
● Demonstrate a safe work practice at all times by adhering to all Acadia safety policies and procedures and ensuring one’s own safety is preserved along with the safety of co-workers, direct reports and Acadia community guests
● Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
● Customer services experience is an asset
● Curling Level 1 is an asset
● Current First Aid from an Alberta OHS approved provider is an asset
● Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) level “C” certification within the last 12 months from an Alberta OHS approved provider is an asset
● Class 5 driver’s license is an asset as bus does not run at end of night shifts
