The Hinton Curling Club is proudly supporting Curling Alberta in hosting the 2024 Alberta Boston Pizza Cup to determine Alberta’s representative at this year’s Montana’s Brier in Regina.
This club has done a marvellous job leading up to this event considering all of the issues that have come their way. Near the end of November, shortly after getting their Junior program up and running for the season, Hinton’s plant went down. Plant repairs started in December, cancelling curling the week of December 11. A few days later, it was determined that the club wouldn’t open until the New Year. Repairs started on December 31st, postponing curling for another week. As the month continued, curling kept getting pushed further and further into the new year.
Hinton determined that a tube failed in the chiller on January 6th. This was about the worst-case scenario as it is a pressurized piece and must be approved by ABSA to make sure it is fixed properly. The estimated cost of the fix is $100,000. They had high hopes of having everything fixed and curling back by the following week (mid-January).
Bad news turned worse and there were more tube and gasket issues with the chiller, meaning it was unable to pass any pressure tests. After weeks of work, and hours and hours of volunteering, the chiller was able to be repaired, pass pressure tests and start making ice again on January 27th. They are hoping to get the ice made and have everyone back curling for the last couple months of the season.
This week at the Boston Pizza Cup we will be running a 50/50 with proceeds going to the Hinton Curling Club to help them recoup some of the costs associated with this huge repair. Curling Alberta wants to help our clubs and Hinton as it is such a vibrant community that we want to help make it through a tough time.
