Safe Sport

What is Safe Sport Training?

Safe Sport is the Coaching Association of Canada’s accredited education program of the Abuse-Free Sports System and is aligned with the Universal Code of Conduct and Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS). The Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport calls for all sporting environments to be free from physical, sexual and psychological abuse. The Safe Sport Training module aligns with those values. It equips coaches, administrators and others to make decisions that promote athletes’ physical and mental wellbeing and empowers sporting organizations to foster a culture that contributes to athlete success. Read more about this program here.

How to take the training:

This training lasts 3 years and must be retaken, once 3 years has passed since the training was initially completed.

Track your training on Sideline Learning

Curling Alberta uses the Sideline Learning platform to assign and track requirements for athletes, parents, coaches, officials and staff members. You can access the site here. As per Curling Alberta’s policy, the date that the Safe Sport Training module must be uploaded to your Sideline Learning profile to be considered eligible to play.

Reprecussions

As per Curling Alberta’s policy, there is no leniency with regard to Safe Sport. If you show up to an event without completing and adding the date the training was complete to your Sideline Learning profile, you will not be allowed to access the ice surface.
If the coach of a team in the U15, U18, U20 and U21 Mixed Doubles has not completed the training or recorded their completion, the whole team is ineligable.
If one of four players has not completed the Safe Sport Trianing, the other three are allowed to play their game. However, if two of four have not completed or submitted their completion, their team is ineligible until the training has been finished.
To note, as soon as the training is complete and status is submitted to Sideline Learning, the player(s) becomes eligible.

Why Should your Centre be Safe Sport Certified?

The Safe Sport training promotes safe, inclusive sport environments to help make sport rewarding and enriching for all. Safe Sport Training gives you the knowledge and skills to create those environments by recognizing, addressing and preventing maltreatment in sport. By promoting that your curling centre is filled with individuals that promote safe and inclusive environments, you can increase the willingness for new individuals to join the sport of curling. The Safe Sport training is not a curling specific training, but multidisciplinary meaning all concepts and learnings are valued and can be used in any sporting environment. We want to help grow the sport of curling! By including a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) training aspect, we hope to help curling centres foster environments to help increase diversity within our centres, ensure everyone is treated with equity and create space for anyone who wishes to take part in our sport. Become a Curling Alberta Safe Sport Certified Centre and show the community that your curling centre is leading the way in safe and inclusive sporting environments.
