Curling Alberta Stick Club Championships Anouncement

Dear Clubs and Curlers,

We know there has been understandable confusion around the pathway from Curling Alberta Stick Club Championships to national-level stick curling events. We appreciate everyone’s patience and want to share the clearest information we have at this time.

Here is how the structure currently works:

National Championships (Nova Scotia – Canadian Stick Curling Championships)
  • Alberta has three guaranteed entries at the Canadian Stick Curling Championships:
    • Men
    • Women
    • Mixed
  • These entries are administered by the Alberta Stick Curling Association (ASCA), which is Alberta’s representative body to the Canadian Stick Curling Association.
  • Curling Alberta does not control the national entry process or final selections for Nova Scotia.
Curling Alberta Stick Club Championships (Didsbury)
  • The Curling Alberta Stick Club Championships are a Curling Alberta–sanctioned provincial club event.
  • Winning this event does not guarantee entry to the Canadian Stick Curling Championships.
  • At the national level, the Curling Alberta Stick Club champion is currently ranked priority 17 in the national backfill process.
  • Because only 12 teams are accepted into the Championship Division:
    • It is very unlikely that the Curling Alberta Stick Club champion will be selected for Nationals.
    • The Men’s and Mixed divisions are already full with waiting lists.
    • If the Curling Alberta champion is a Men’s or Mixed team, they will not be able to enter the Challenge Division.
Possible Exception (Declined Entries)
  • If a team that qualifies through the Alberta Stick Curling Association (Men, Women, or Mixed) declines to attend Nationals, that entry may be offered to the Curling Alberta Stick Club champion if the category matches.
  • This is not guaranteed and depends entirely on withdrawals at the national level.
What Curlers Should Do Now
  • Clubs should continue to register teams for the Curling Alberta Stick Club Championships as planned.
  • Teams should do so with the understanding that:
    • The event remains a valid provincial championship experience.
    • Participation does not guarantee a national berth.
  • The Alberta Stick Curling Association will begin its own championship processes this weekend, starting with the Alberta Mixed Stick Championship in Legal.
We recognize that this is not as straightforward as anyone would like, and we understand the frustration this has caused. We are sharing this information so clubs and curlers can make informed decisions before registration deadlines.
